MTV + Real = Urge + Rhapsody

Posted by: Juan Lopez-Valcarcel In: Internet| Movies & TV

Great news today with the announcement of a JV between MTV and Real combining the Urge music service with Rhapsody.

From a user perspective it might not make much of a difference, as Real had already caught up with MTV on Staff Picks and User Playlists.

Still, this will add much needed brand “coolness” factor and marketing dollars to convince people to join the future of the music industry: a multi-device subscription service with deep catalog.

I also suspect Rhapsody has struggled to make money over the last years (Urge too) but together could reach a tipping point in the growth of their combined user base to go beyond its high fixed costs towards profitability.
announced in January, but wouldn’t it be great to see a combination of MTV editorial + Rhapsody catalog + TiVo TV platform?
